James Kniest is an American cinematographer known for his atmospheric visual style and exceptional command of lighting, particularly within the horror and thriller genres. After studying cinematography and underwater photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography, he spent years working as a gaffer, camera operator, and lighting specialist before becoming a full-time director of photography.
Kniest has built an impressive body of work across both film and television, serving as cinematographer on projects including Annabelle, Hush, The Bye Bye Man, Within, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club, and American Horror Stories. His work is often praised for creating tension through carefully crafted lighting, shadow, and camera movement rather than relying solely on visual effects.
His latest feature, The Devil’s Mouth (2026), directed by Jeff Wadlow, continues his collaboration with suspense-driven storytelling, bringing his signature cinematic style to an underwater survival thriller.
